Jazz
Jazz, for ages 5 and up, refers to music in which a melody is played against a steady background beat and syncopation. It uses today’s music. Jazz dance involves the use of bent knees, turned in isolations and explosive unexpected movements. Jazz dance can be incorporated in the classroom by demonstrating the different shapes and forms that your body can transform into. Students really enjoy making their bodies into different forms. This is a great experience for the kids and teacher to see.

Tap
Tap dance blends the Irish jig and the English clog with the African shuffle. Tap involves soft shoes and was influenced by jazz, bent knees arms work as counterbalance, sounds created by metal plates attached to shoes.
Dress Code: Leotard and any fitting bottom (jazz pants, shorts). NO baggy shirts and pants allowed. Hair must be pulled back. Proper shoes required.
Ballet
Ballet is a symmetrical and balanced action which involves unnatural and abstract movements, turned out hips, up right spine, pointed toes, straight knees and the turned out position. Ballet could be incorporated in the classroom as a type of daily warm-up.
Getting your students to move and stretch their bodies is a good way to start off your day. Students need to be able to move about and get exercise throughout their day at school. Ballet gives students the feeling of style of grace and helps give good posture. It is the core of all dancing.
Dress Code: Solid leotard and tights (black and pink preferred). Ballet skirt may be worn. Hair is to be tightly secured. Pink ballet shoes.
Hip-Hop & Lyrical
Lyrical (ages 9 and up) is a mix of ballet and jazz. Choreography shows more feeling and emotion. It teaches students to use their core and control their movements.
Today, many dance studios offer hip hop (ages 6 and up) classes in which they practice elements of various hip hop dances, often mixing them with more structured dance styles such as jazz. Hip-hop dance classes range from a beginner to intermediate levels. These classes encourage students to use their bodies in ways that encourage many different stylistic techniques. This style is not structured and allows students to interpret the moves in varied ways. Hip-hop classes, although fast-paced and challenging, allow people to emphasize their creative rhythmic talents.
Dress Code: Leotard and any fitting bottom (jazz pants, shorts). NO baggy shirts and pants allowed. Hair must be pulled back. Proper shoes required.
Modern Dance
Modern dance (ages 11 and up) tells stories, explores emotions and is used as an ideology for themes. Modern dance is a break from ballet and uses the extension of contractions and releases. This type of dance really shows and creates meaning and feelings as well.
